I would like to share some things to remember if you have Cats or Kittens that you wish to surrender or "give away".

I have a Cat Rescue in Grand Rapids, Michigan and something I have seen alot of is people posting FREE Cats or Kittens on web sites to get rid of them. Or posting signs  for FREE KITTENS.

I certainly understand that people who post their cats on these sites feel they are doing what will hopefully result in a good, loving forever home for the animal.

There are some things that alot of us dont know about those sites.

People who seek animals for scientific research flood those sites and offer sometimes alot of money to have the cats shipped to them, sometimes even out of the country. Never agree to ship an animal to someone you dont know  out of state or out of the country.

I have also found that there are groups of people who check those sites for FREE cats  for the purpose of LIVE BAIT for pythons.

We all at some time in our life have a litter of kittens we did not plan for and the most typical thought is to offer them for free to get them homes quickly. This is rapidly becoming not in the best interest of the cats.

My advice to those of you in this situation is to:

(1) Call your local cat rescue groups and see if they have openings or foster ability for your kittens. "Most cat rescues are over crowded and some do not take kittens at all" but it dont hurt to call and see what your options are.

(2) Call local pet stores and ask if they take surrendered kittens. Alot of them do take surrendered kittens at 8 weeks of age but need advance notice to prepare for them. It is best to call the pet stores when the kittens are about 6 weeks of age to make arrangements for them by the time they are 8 weeks old.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE KITTENS FROM THE MOTHER  UNTIL 8 WEEKS OF AGE.

(3). If the first 2 options have not been helpful to you then you can place a local ad in the pet section of the paper to list the kittens but  NEVER say FREE to a good home. Instead say something like this:

Beautiful kittens now available for adoption from private owner. Please call for details and price. You may include descriptions in the ad of the kittens if you like.

It is best if you charge some kind of fee  because that will discourage the undesirable people who seek FREE kittens for LIVE BAIT.

Just remember that the word FREE is the key that these preditors are looking for. Give your kittens the best chance at life possible and be picky and careful as to WHOM you place them with.

It is nice to be able to find homes that will take kittens in pairs but beware of people who say they will take more than 2. That should be a red flag.

Your local Cat rescues and pet Stores should have good information if you find yourself in this situation.

Protect your  Cats and Kittens by using good judgement.

that's not always true-- alot of us who pick up a kitty or kitten that is listed as "free to a good home"  are just that.   I got a cat that was free to a good home over 6 years ago and she has been a pleasure.  In fact she is part of a 3 human family as well as 5 canine family, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.   When my sheltie delivered her puppies a few days ago-- Genie, our cat was right there part of the process.  Cheyenne would not let the other dogs anywhere near her, but Genie was allowed right there in her playpen!  The pups are now 10 days old and eyes are just starting to open and Genie still visits them everyday.   Cheyenne is starting to relax a little and let the other dogs close to them.

Animals are just like humans and know when and how to show their love to the people that love them.... sooooooooooooo don't always be so discouraging when talking about giving away an animal!   There are alot of us -- animal lovers that can not afford to spend alot of money on a pet-- and free to a good home is our only option.

As I said-- I started out with the one cat and I am up to 5 dogs-- I have three that are registered AKC and shown on the circuit sheltie, 1 that had to be retired because of cancer AKC show dog, sheltie, and a hurricane Francis (Florida) sheltie/collie mix that is 25 inches tall and weighs roughly 75 pounds.  These are all my babies-- they live under a AC set at 73 degrees year round.

I love my furrkids with all my heart-- and they will be with me forever!

Not all people are bad------ some of us are just less fortunate than others!

I certainly agree with you and by no means ment to come across that ALL people taking FREE cats  are bad or have bad intentions.

I also have 9 cats of my own and several of them I got as FREE and they have been with me for years and they each add much joy to my life. I consider them my "Kids" and treat them as such.

My posting was to alert people of the POSSIBLE undesirable things out there that are SOMETIMES associated with the word FREE when it comes to posting free animals.

I ment no offense at all to the MANY people who are good, caring cat owners and lovers. Again, my posting is intended to alert people of the bad things that  I , as a cat rescue owner have encountered on more than one occaision.
