I have 4 shelties and a collie /sheltie mix.  Whenever I leave the house, even for a short trip my stud gets overly excited and starts to bark.  When asked to stop he generally does but only for a short time.  He and my older dog both get super excited at dinnertime also.

Any suggestions....... they are all house dogs and get  plenty of outside exercise.

Hi Donna,

Sounds like a noisy household :).  I'll see what I can find out from others regarding this situation and hopefully someone will come along with other suggestions.  Tks,

Karen

Hi, I've heard  that they bark because they do not what to be left along and you can train them to know that you will be coming back by leaving for a couple of minutes at a time and then being all excited to see them when you return.

Then just keep leaving for longer and longer.....

Never try it but if you do and it works for you let me know

Hi Thanks for the post.  I believe this is an issue for many pet owners.  I myself have had this happen.  I tried everything, but honestly what seemed to work is what the poster b4 has said......Leave them for a few minutes at a time, let them know you will be back and let it get longer each time.  I know its a pain, but we love our animals and want them to feel secure.  Obviously yours has whats called seperation anxiety.  Nothing will help unless you make them know YOU WILL BE BACK.

Let us all know how you made out as I'm sure there are many of us wanting to see how everything came out.
Tks,
Karen

as I sstated... it has been tried and has worked yet Jake is just a noisy soul.

He is a registered stud dog and just has to get his point across from time to time. My shelties range from age 2 almost 3 to almost 7 years of age.  Noise most of the time is not  a problem. It seems to be the worst when the door bell rings.

Season (periods) for the girls are nuts.... but then they are supposed to be.

They only time that he is quiet -- is when he is in the ring for competition.

We have also tried barking collars-- but I didn't like the affect.

I guess that he is jut a noise maker.   He accepts the fact that I am leaving and has no problem with that. I tell him that I have whatever (it is that I need to do ) and he goes to his crate and climbs in. and whenI am back -- then he knows it's snuggle time. He gets his point across and settles down.

Jake is just a noisy little boy!   Shelties are like that!!!!!!
